RCB News – Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ART SPRINGS TO LIFE IN IMAGES: ColorSoundMovement ROCHESTER, NY – The creative talents of Steve Carpenter, internationally renowned artist, Deborah Fox, early-music lutenist, and Jamey Leverett, artistic director of the Rochester City Ballet, converge for the first time in Images:ColorSoundMovement, June 16 & 17 at 7 p.m. at Rochester City Ballet studios, 1326 University Ave. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at all Wegmans stores and at the door. “The world is primarily dancing energy, assuming this then that form,” Carpenter says. “By working together, in the same place at the same time, Jamey, Deborah and I hope to create a fresh and invigorating form of artistic expression.” Images:ColorSoundMovement begins on a 20 x 24 ft. projection screen with photographs of Carpenter preparing frame and canvas for a new abstract image. As he begins to apply color, the 16th century lute of Deborah Fox and the choreography of Jamey Leverett set on the Rochester City Ballet company members bring the painting to life. Nearly a dozen of Carpenter’s dramatic, thought-provoking abstract works anchor the performance. The extraordinary collaboration concludes with an improvisation, a new work created live on stage as artist, musician and dancers guide the flow of color and form onto the projection screen. Carpenter came to Rochester in 1999 following a successful, 30-year European-based art career. His works have been exhibited in eleven countries. Carpenter has also worked as a graphic artist for Walt Disney. He now teaches and exhibits his work at the Steve Carpenter Gallery and Art Center on Anderson Avenue. Jamey Leverett has done extensive choreography for Rochester City Ballet. Her works have been performed throughout the United States, including the Gala performance of the South East Regional Ballet Festival, Ballet Builders: New Choreographer’s on Pointe in New York City, and at the Jackson International Ballet Competition. Her acclaimed choreography includes Little Red: The Ballet, Inner Voices, Catharsis, La Vista del Sol, and Gershwin in the Park. Deborah Fox is a lutenist with a span of repertoire ranging from medieval to baroque music. Her international career includes solo recitals, chamber music, and baroque opera. She has performed and recorded throughout the U.S and Canada, Europe and Australia. In 2005 she founded Pegasus Music, an early music concert series in Rochester. Images:ColorSoundMovement is presented by MECA, a creative arts lecture series co-founded in 2003 by Carpenter and Rochester artist Kate Lipsky to showcase the international quality of Rochester creative community. The collaborative performance is made possible by a $3,500 grant from the Arts and Cultural Council for Greater Rochester in partnership with the New York State Council of the Arts and New York State Legislature.
